As the year draws to a close, I have been reflecting on how to end it on a positive note. With tumultuous world events often causing feelings of despair and hopelessness, it is easy to be swept away by the negativity unfolding on our screens. Yet, despite the chaos around us, there is a powerful truth we must remember while we cannot control every situation, we can control how we respond to them.

Hopelessness is not a permanent state but an attitude—a mindset that colours our perception. The circumstances may indeed be challenging, but the despair is a label we attach to those situations. So, how do we shift this mindset to one of hope? It begins by recognising opportunities to do good and to ease the suffering around us. Let us not allow despair to cancel out hope, nor let it become our default mindset.

Hope, a vision of a brighter future, can become our dominant feeling if we intentionally cultivate it. By shifting our mindset, we transform hope from a mere emotion into actions or words that elevate our perspective from pessimism to optimism.

Take the phrase “life is difficult,” and reframe it to, “Life is presenting us with opportunities to grow and learn.” When facing adversity, remind yourself, “I am resourceful, and I am on track.” As Henry Ford famously stated, *“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.” *

To enact any true change, we must be driven by a compelling reason. Ask yourself, “What will it cost me to remain in a state of despair?” By contemplating the benefits of embracing hope, even the bleakest situations transform into opportunities for better outcomes.

As a final reflection, consider this: when despair knocks at your door, tell yourself, “I am willing to explore the potential.” Embracing this mindset allows us to detach from gloom and open pathways to hope and progress.
