Anyone who has transitioned or is considering becoming their own boss might appreciate this reflection. In August last year, I left my profession as a lawyer after almost three decades. Although I still hold a practising certificate, my current path is quite different. I am a writer and solicitor turned Leadership Coach, sharing what I have learned from my personal and professional experience.

I’ve been assisting professional leaders in discovering power, clarity, and purpose to navigate grief and change in their personal and professional lives through my meticulously structured and tailored one-to-one coaching program.

Without further ado, here are my lessons learned:

• I was a business owner long before I realised it, not since just last year, but for 15 years!
• I have the power to influence and help others find their superpower to transform their world for the better.
• My ability to engage is noted, and people truly value my coaching services.
• I am not afraid to invest in my own learning to master my craft and better serve my clients.
• The concept of a regular wage or typical 9-to-5 doesn’t exist here—this is passion, working around the clock, and when I feel inspired!
• I cherish having control over how I spend my time and who I spend it with.
• While it can be lonely at times, connecting with like-minded people is vital.
• I take pride in being a brilliant coach.
• Managing my enterprise without the security of a regular monthly wage is something I handle with confidence.
• When I need expertise beyond my own, I find solutions and enlist the right people to help.
• My creativity knows no bounds—I’ve transformed from a straight-laced solicitor to a blogger, author, writer, newspaper columnist, podcaster, runner, and entrepreneur!
• I can not only survive but thrive and shine solo.
• Being super organised with my time is essential.
• Like raising my handsome German Shepherd, running a business is challenging but incredibly rewarding.
• I am a teacher at heart, inspiring others to take action.
• I continuously hone my listening skills and strive to be fully present before, during, and after coaching sessions, as this is not merely a transactional service.

In my current work environment, there’s no place for office politics—just me and my small team of talented souls, including my lovable German Shepherd.

If you are contemplating taking the leap into self-employment and carving out your own path, remember this:

The journey may require courage and resilience, but the rewards are immeasurable. You have within you the ability to transform your passion into a thriving venture. Embrace the challenges, cherish the victories, and reach out for support when needed.

Having walked down this path myself, I understand the excitement and uncertainty it brings. If you are contemplating going solo or feeling apprehensive, know that support is available. Should you wish to explore this journey further or have a conversation about your ideas, feel free to reach out. Sometimes, a small step can lead to profound changes. Many have helped me so I want to lend my support to those in need 🌟

Respect and warm wishes, Daxa
